Dr. James McGurk is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who helps children, teens, adults, and families build greater confidence, emotional balance, and connection. Warm and approachable, he specializes in supporting people navigating ADHD, anxiety, and learning differences, offering clear, practical strategies alongside compassionate, relational care.
Dr. McGurk earned his Doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy from Alliant International University. His dissertation, “Shame in Families with ADHD,” examined compassion-based approaches to deepen understanding and repair relationships—work that continues to inform his clinical focus on empathy, family systems, and strengths-based problem solving.
Using a relational approach, Dr. McGurk partners closely with children, parent–child dyads, and caregivers to strengthen communication, trust, and everyday coping skills. He blends skill-building with emotional attunement so families can move from survival to forward progress; parents receive clear guidance designed to increase confidence and effectiveness in supporting their children.
A frequent presenter, Dr. McGurk has delivered his talk “How to Build Confidence in Children with ADHD” at schools, conferences, and parent groups. He brings a warm, collaborative style to both therapy and community education, creating a safe space where clients of all ages can better understand themselves and the relationships that matter most.
